Root Coverage – Challenging Concepts

Once again, professors Sérgio and Alexandra have shown special care in the selection and in the preparation of the chapters. The diversity of issues, including the definition of gingival recession, a historical overview of surgeries, periodontal biotype, diagnosis and classification of defects, all show the authors’ academic vision, with a view to establishing biological bases for periodontal surgery. The other chapters, addressing issues such as biomodification of root surfaces, surgical techniques, the instruments used, the preparation prior to surgery, postsurgical care and complications, all show substantial clinical and surgical experience. This experience, and the in-depth knowledge of periodontal literature, give the reader a rich and extremely useful text for study of surgical interventions for root cover. I could not forget to highlight the chapter about the use of magnification during surgery. This chapter looks at advantages, drawbacks, equipment, and specific instruments. This means that the reader gets the opportunity to reflect about the importance, or otherwise, of a change in paradigm. I would like to congratulate my dear Sérgio and Alexandra, and all others who have collaborated with this work, for having once again got the content right, considering it to be such a tricky yet interesting subject. In so doing, they shall once again enrich the general theme of ‘surgery for root cover’ for currently active periodontists, and also inspire new generations.
